VEIN Server Config Explained: Game.ini and Engine.ini Settings
A VEIN dedicated server is configured with two files. Game.ini holds the server identity and access settings: name, password, player cap, public listing, admins and whitelist. Engine.ini holds the gameplay rules as vein.* console variables under [ConsoleVariables]: PvP, zombies, time of day, loot scarcity and so on.
VEIN is in early access and the developer documentation for the server is short, so most of the key names and defaults below were cross-checked across several community and host references (all agreeing unless noted) and the in-game variable list. The references we used were current for the 0.02x builds. If a key stops working after an update, check the patch notes first.
- Files live in
Vein/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/(Windows) orVein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/(Linux). Stop the server before editing; the game rewrites them on shutdown. - Name, password, public flag and admins go in
[/Script/Vein.VeinGameSession]. Max players isMaxPlayersunder[/Script/Engine.GameSession]. - PvP, zombie health, time speed and loot scarcity are
vein.PvP,vein.Zombies.Health,vein.Time.TimeMultiplierandvein.Scarcity.DifficultyinEngine.ini. - There is no admin password. Admins are granted by SteamID64 in
AdminSteamIDsandSuperAdminSteamIDs. - A missing line means the default. The game strips lines that equal the default, so do not be surprised when they vanish after a restart.

Where the VEIN config files are and how editing works
Both files sit in the same folder under the server install. On Windows that is ...\VEIN Dedicated Server\Vein\Saved\Config\WindowsServer\; on Linux it is Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. You may see the first file written in lower case (game.ini) on some Windows installs.
- Stop the server first. Unreal rewrites both files on shutdown, so edits made while it runs are lost.
- A missing line is the default. Unreal removes lines whose value matches the default, so a setting you wrote can disappear after a restart. That is normal.
- Settings are not stored in the save. Community references note that since 0.016 Hotfix 5, dedicated servers keep settings in these variables rather than in the world save, so a save moved to a new server does not bring its settings with it. Copy
Engine.inias well.
Game.ini: server name, password, player limit and visibility
A minimal Game.ini looks like this. Copy the section names exactly.
[/Script/Engine.GameSession]
MaxPlayers=16
[/Script/Vein.VeinGameSession]
ServerName=My VEIN Server
ServerDescription=Friendly co-op, PvP off
Password=
bPublic=True
SuperAdminSteamIDs=76561190000000000
AdminSteamIDs=76561190000000001
+AdminSteamIDs=76561190000000002
[OnlineSubsystemSteam]
GameServerQueryPort=27015| Section | Key | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
/Script/Engine.GameSession | MaxPlayers | Player cap. The -MaxPlayers=64 launch argument can override it | 16 per one host reference; the developer wiki does not state one |
/Script/Vein.VeinGameSession | ServerName | Name shown in the server browser | none |
ServerDescription | Text shown in the in-game browser | none | |
Password | Join password; empty means no password | empty | |
bPublic | False hides the server from the browser | True | |
bAntiCheatProtected | Turns on anti-cheat | False | |
BindAddr | Address the server binds to | 0.0.0.0 | |
HeartbeatInterval | Seconds between pings to the master server | 30.0 | |
AdminSteamIDs, SuperAdminSteamIDs | SteamID64 values, one per line | none | |
OnlineSubsystemSteam | GameServerQueryPort | Steam query port (UDP) | 27015 |
bVACEnabled | Valve Anti-Cheat; 0 off, 1 on | 0 | |
/Script/Vein.VeinGameStateBase | WhitelistedPlayers | If any entries exist, only those players can join (0.023 and later) | none |
Defaults here come from host reference docs, not from the developer, and two of them vary by setup: a forum-posted working config used HeartbeatInterval=5.0, and the query port is set by launch argument on many hosts. Treat the table as "what you will usually see" and confirm in your own file.
Admins, super admins and whitelists
VEIN has no admin password. You become an admin because your SteamID64 is listed in Game.ini. Super admins can additionally grant and remove admin rights from the in-game admin menu. List the first ID on its own line and prefix further IDs with + so Unreal appends them to the array instead of overwriting it, as in the example above.
The whitelist uses the same pattern, with WhitelistedPlayers under [/Script/Vein.VeinGameStateBase]. Once any ID is on it, everyone else is refused, so add yourself and your admins before restarting.
Admin commands and the admin menu (opened with the \ key in game) are covered in community command lists; there is no "cheats enabled" switch, since only admins can run those commands on a multiplayer server.
Engine.ini: gameplay rules as vein.* variables
Every gameplay rule is a console variable written under [ConsoleVariables] in Engine.ini. The full list of vein.* variables runs to more than 250 entries. These are the ones most servers actually change, with the defaults the game reports:
| Variable | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
vein.PvP | Player-vs-player damage; 0 off, 1 on | 1 |
vein.BuildObjectPvP | PvP damage against player-built objects | 1 |
vein.OfflineRaidProtection | Offline raid protection | 0 |
vein.Permadeath | Permanent death | 0 |
vein.Zombies.Health | Zombie hit points | 40 |
vein.Zombies.DamageMultiplier | Zombie damage multiplier | 1 |
vein.Zombies.SpeedMultiplier | Zombie speed multiplier | 1 |
vein.AISpawner.Enabled | Master switch for AI spawning | 1 |
vein.AISpawner.SpawnCapMultiplierZombie | Zombie spawn cap multiplier | 1 |
vein.AISpawner.Hordes.Enabled | Horde events | 1 |
vein.AISpawner.Hordes.ChancePerMinute | How often hordes start | 0.05 |
vein.ZombieInfectionChance | Chance of infection from zombie attacks | 0.01 |
vein.Time.TimeMultiplier | Speed of the day/night cycle; higher is faster | 16 |
vein.Stats.XPMultiplier | Experience gain | 1 |
vein.Scarcity.Difficulty | Loot scarcity; 0 abundant to 4 very scarce | 2 |
vein.ContainersRespawn.Interval | Seconds between container loot respawns | 10800 |
vein.BuildObjectDecay | Decay of built objects; utility cabinets prevent it | 1 |
vein.Calendar.WaterShutoffTimeDays | In-game days until water shuts off | 30 |
vein.Calendar.ElectricalShutoffTimeDays | In-game days until electricity shuts off | 46 |
vein.Autosave.Interval | Seconds between autosaves | 300 |
vein.Activity.AFKKickTimeSeconds | AFK kick timer; 0 leaves it off | 0 |
[ConsoleVariables]
vein.PvP=0
vein.Zombies.Health=60
vein.Scarcity.Difficulty=3
vein.Time.TimeMultiplier=8
vein.Autosave.Interval=300Values appear as 1.000000 in the game's own dump, but plain numbers such as 1 are accepted in config files.
Changing settings without restarting
Admins can change gameplay settings live from the in-game admin menu, in its Config section, which is the safest way to test a value before committing it to Engine.ini. Anything you want to survive a wipe, a reinstall or a move to another host still has to be in the config files.
If your server is hosted, the same two files are edited through your host's tools or over SFTP. Hosting with ChicagoServers? The Vein server hosting page lists what is included, such as free server backups and SFTP file access.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I set the VEIN server name and password?
In Game.ini under [/Script/Vein.VeinGameSession], using ServerName and Password. Leave Password empty for an open server. Stop the server before editing and restart afterwards.
How do I turn PvP off on a VEIN server?
Add vein.PvP=0 under [ConsoleVariables] in Engine.ini. vein.BuildObjectPvP controls PvP damage to player-built objects separately.
How do I make someone an admin on a VEIN server?
Add their SteamID64 to AdminSteamIDs (or SuperAdminSteamIDs for full rights) under [/Script/Vein.VeinGameSession] in Game.ini. There is no admin password. Use a plus sign prefix on additional entries.
Why did my VEIN Engine.ini setting disappear?
Unreal removes config lines that equal the default value when the server shuts down. If a line you set to the default vanishes, that is expected and the setting still applies.
