How to add mods to your Palworld server
Introduction
Since Palworld's release, exciting new mods have emerged online to enhance the gaming experience and make the game even more enjoyable. In this guide, we will explore the process of adding game modifications (mods) to your Palworld server and/or game client.
* Unfortunately, RE-UE4SS which is required for some mods, is only scripted for a Windows framework so far and not Linux, which is what our infrastructure and about half of the other hosts out there use as an operating system on our nodes. The goal is to have native support for this framework on Linux at a future date, at which point we will fully integrate RE-UE4SS into the ChicagoServers infrastructure.
Key Information
Currently, you can view and download available mods through third-party modding sites. We recommend using reputable sites like Nexus Mods or Curseforge. Note that you cannot download mods through Steam Workshop at this time.
Important Note
ChicagoServers is not responsible for any potential modifications or damage to your server files or world by installing mods. We strongly advise making backups before proceeding. Learn more about backups through our dedicated Palworld Savegame guide.
Supported Mod Types
We currently only support PAK mods (.PAK files). Mods requiring executable files are not supported for security reasons.
Server & Client-Sided Mods
When selecting mods, first determine whether they are server-sided or client-sided. This information can typically be found in the mod description on the website or by contacting the mod author directly.
Server-sided mods can be installed directly on the server and don't require any action from players. Client-sided mods, however, require each user who wishes to connect to download and install the mod locally in their game files.
Compatibility Check
Ensure the mod you want to use is compatible with the current game-build version of Palworld.
Step 1: Preparing PAK File
Browse and download a wide selection of mods from the recommended modding sites mentioned earlier. Remember, we only support PAK mods (.PAK files) for security purposes. Download the desired mod to your device and, if necessary, use a tool like 7zip/WinRar to extract the .pak file.
Step 2: Upload via FTP
Once you have the PAK files ready, go to the Control Panel > File Manager section of your game server's web interface.
Alternatively, you can use an FTP program (i.e FileZilla) to connect to your Palworld server and drag/drop files to/from your PC and the server. More info on connecting via FTP can be found here!
Next, upload the PAK files for the mod to the following directory:
/Pal/Content/Paks/ (Pictured below in the control panel's File Manager)
And that's it for the server side! Now let's move on to the client side.
Step 3: Install Mods Client-Side
Now that all mods are installed on the server, any client who wants to join the server must repeat this process. Currently, there is no way for a client to automatically retrieve mods upon joining. We hope this changes!
Start by opening Steam, right-clicking on Palworld, and selecting Manage -> Browse local files.
A folder will appear with your Palworld game installation on your local device. Navigate to the following directory:
../Palworld/Pal/Content/Paks/
Move the mod's .pak files into this folder. Repeat this for any additional mod you have added.
Step 4: Launch Palworld & Connect to Server
You can now connect to your Palworld server and enjoy the experience with new mods. Use our dedicated Palworld Direct Connection guide if you need assistance connecting to your server.
Once you load in, you should see the changes made by the mods.
Any Issues?
Ensure Compatible Mod Version
Ensure the mods installed are compatible with the current game-build version of Palworld. If not, you may encounter errors or non-functional mod features. Contact the mod author for updates if necessary.
Restart the Server
Restart the server after making changes or if you don't see any mods. Consult the mod author for any specific errors or bugs.
