How to find your Valheim server's seed
How to Find Your Valheim World Seed OR Set a Custom Seed
There are many reasons why a server owner might wish to know the seed of their Valheim World, however, the Valheim developers don't make the seed of a world easily accessible through commands.
Your Active World Seed
- Stop your server
- Connect to your server, using the FTP Connection
- You can also use the File Manager located in the server control panel.
- Located the folder worlds_local
- There you find two files named like your savegame (.db and .fwl)
- Download the .fwl -file and open it with a program like the texteditor for Notepad++
- In the first line, you see your savegame name. In the second row, you see a character-string – this is your world seed, as pictured below:

If you need to find the seed of a world that is not actively running on your server, you can upload the world file to a third-party tool to find the seed.
- Access your control panel and Stop your server.
- Navigate to the File Manager.
- Once there, go to the worlds_local folder and download your .fwl file.
- Upload it to https://valheim-map.world/getseed.html and your seed will be revealed!
Setting a Custom Seed on your Valheim Server
- Start the Valheim game on your PC.
- Select your character in-game and click Start
- On the start window, click New
- Enter the world name you wish to use and the custom seed you want to play on.
- Click Done, select the world afterwards and click Start.
- Using File Explorer on your desktop, go to C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local
- You'll be using both the .db & .fwl files of your world you just created
- Open FileZilla (If you don't know how to connect to your service you can follow this article) and connect to your service.
- Proceed to the \worlds_local folder and upload both .db & .fwl files there.
* You can also use the File Manager in the server control panel to upload these files. - Proceed to the startup section of your control panel now, and under the World Name Variable, enter your world name you just uploaded (Example: if the file names are "Dedicated.db & Dedicated.fwl" the world name will be "Dedicated", enter this into the variable input box).
* Be sure to overwrite any/all files when asked.
