How to connect to your tModLoader server

tModLoader is a free, separate game on Steam for anyone who owns Terraria. Players join your server from tModLoader, not from Terraria itself.

Your server's address (its IP and port, such as 203.0.113.25:7777) is at the top of its page in the control panel.

  1. Start tModLoader and choose Multiplayer, then Join via IP.
  2. Pick the character to play.
  3. Type the server's IP (the part before the colon), then the port (the number after it, often 7777).
  4. If the server has a join password, type it when asked.

You don't need to install the server's mods yourself: tModLoader downloads them as you join.

Can't join?

  • Version mismatch: your tModLoader and the server must be the same version. Steam keeps your game on the newest stable release; to update the server, open the Updates tab and click Install next to tModLoader (latest release). If you play the preview branch in Steam, switch back to the stable one.
  • A mod fails to load: mods need the tModLoader version they were made for. Check the Console tab for the mod's name, and remove or update it on the Mods tab.
